Chapter 15 - One Final Conversation

Clara almost refused.

Then she went.

Ethan sat behind glass in a plain gray shirt.

No tuxedo. No champagne. No family name that could dress up what he had done.

Clara held the receiver to her ear.

"Did you know your mother planned to use my parents?"

He closed his eyes.

"Yes."

The word was quiet.

"How?"

"She said she would pressure them financially. Dig up old tax issues. Embarrass your father. I told Victor no physical contact."

"And when she pushed them into the pool?"

His face twisted.

"I froze."

"Why?"

Clara stared through the glass.

"That isn't an answer that saves you."

"I know."

"Did you forge my signature?"

"Yes."

No excuse this time.

"Did you move Harbor money?"

"Yes."

"Did you put the shares in my name so I would take the fall?"

He looked down.

Clara felt tears come, but they were not for the wedding.

They were for the man she had believed existed.

Ethan pressed his palm against the glass.

"I'm sorry."

Clara did not lift her hand.

She stood.

"Clara."

She looked back.

"I did love you."

"I know."

That answer hurt him more than denial.

Outside the detention center, Martin was waiting.

"Victor asked for a deal," he said.

"In exchange for what?"

"A confession about Daniel Wynn's car."

Clara stopped walking.

Martin added, "And he says Olivia gave the order."
