Chapter 16 - The Truth About Daniel

Victor's confession did not arrive cleanly.
Nothing in the Sterling story did.
He claimed Olivia told him only to "scare Daniel off."
He loosened a brake-line fitting at the repair shop, expecting the leak to be noticed before the car left the city.
It was not.
Daniel drove for hours.
The line failed on a rural road.
He died alone.
Olivia denied ordering any damage to the car.
She said Victor acted on his own after hearing her complain that Daniel was blackmailing the family.
Prosecutors found no recording of the original instruction.
But they had Victor's notebook, old employment records, financial transfers after the crash, and the call luring Daniel to the Sterling house.
It was enough to reopen the case.
Not enough to make the past simple.
Rachel sat beside Helen when prosecutors explained it.
For a while neither woman spoke.
Then Rachel said, "I spent half my life imagining one perfect piece of proof."
Rachel's eyes filled.
"I'm sorry I used Clara."
"Tell her."
"I did."
"Tell her again."
Across the room, Clara watched them.
Her father hid the ledger.
Her mother hid Daniel.
Rachel hid inside Sterling's systems.
Ethan hid crimes behind love.
Olivia hid control behind family loyalty.
Clara had hidden too.
She had minimized Devereux Capital around Ethan because he became insecure whenever her work came up.
That did not make her responsible for his choices.
She was done with that.
Martin entered with a final update.
"The court froze the disputed CD Holdings shares."
"Good."
"Sterling Group wants to negotiate repayment to Harbor victims before bankruptcy becomes unavoidable."
Clara looked through the window at her parents.
"Then let's make sure the people who were ignored get paid first."
Martin smiled faintly.
"There's one complication."
May you like
"Of course there is."
"Olivia is requesting to speak with you before arraignment."
