Chapter 3 - The Signature

The ambulance lights painted the cream-stone mansion red and white.
Clara rode with her parents to the hospital, still wearing her wedding dress.
She wanted Ethan nowhere near them.
Martin followed in one of the black sedans.
At the emergency room, Helen was diagnosed with a badly bruised shoulder and mild whiplash. Robert had scraped his palm on the pool edge. No broken bones. Clara should have felt relief.
Instead, she stared at the photocopy Martin had placed on the small plastic table beside her.
Her signature sat at the bottom of a ten-million-dollar personal guarantee.
It looked almost perfect.
Almost.
"The C is wrong," Clara said.
Martin nodded. "I noticed."
Her father leaned closer. "Who had access to your signature?"
"Ethan had old contracts in our home office."
Helen closed her eyes.
Clara felt sick saying it aloud.
Martin turned a page. "There is more. The document was uploaded from an IP address registered to Sterling Group's executive floor."
"When?"
"Three weeks ago."
Three weeks ago, Clara had been tasting wedding cakes with Helen.
Three weeks ago, Ethan had kissed her forehead in the kitchen and told her not to worry about work.
Her phone vibrated.
Clara showed Martin.
"Do not go alone," he said.
Robert's voice was quiet. "Don't go at all."
Clara looked at her father. "If he forged my name, I need to know why."
"You need to know what he did, not hear how he explains it."
The words landed because Robert rarely spoke harshly.
Helen reached for Clara's hand. "Baby, when someone stands still while his mother throws your parents into a pool, believe the part where he stood still."
Clara nodded.
Inside was a small silver flash drive.
Helen stared at it.
"That's not mine."
Martin took the bag without touching the drive.
A handwritten label was stuck to one side.

It contained only four words:
ASK ETHAN ABOUT MAY 14.
