Chapter 11 - The Summer House

Martin pulled Clara behind the conference-room wall.

Ethan grabbed a heavy brass sculpture from a shelf.

"Stay back," he said.

Clara almost laughed at the timing.

The elevator doors opened.

No one stepped out.

A small package sat on the floor.

Martin's security team arrived through the stairwell seconds later.

Inside was not a weapon.

It was a phone.

The screen lit up with a live video call.

Olivia appeared.

She was seated in the back of a car.

"Clara," she said. "You've made this very ugly."

Clara stepped toward the phone. "Where is Victor?"

"Busy."

"Stay away from my parents."

Olivia smiled faintly. "Your parents should have stayed away from mine twenty-two years ago."

"What does that mean?"

"Ask your mother why Daniel was driving to my house the night he died."

Clara's blood ran cold.

Olivia continued. "He was not some brave whistleblower. He was blackmailing my husband."

"You're lying."

"Am I? Rachel has spent decades turning a thief into a saint."

Clara heard movement behind Olivia.

A man's voice.

Victor.

"Where are you?" Clara asked.

"Somewhere you won't find before I finish cleaning up Ethan's mess."

Ethan stepped forward. "Mom, stop."

Olivia's expression hardened.

"You built it on stolen money."

"I built it because your father nearly destroyed us."

Then she looked back at Clara.

"Bring me the ledger and Rachel's original files by six tonight. In exchange, I'll give you the only recording that proves what happened to Daniel."

Clara said, "You don't have it."

Olivia smiled.

"He called me from the car."

The screen went black.

Ethan stared at the dead phone.

Then he whispered, "I know where she is."

Olivia owned no property under her own name.

But Ethan remembered a summer house his father had used years ago on the Connecticut coast.

Police found the property through an old trust.

Clara wanted to go with them.

The detective in charge said no.

For once, she listened.

She stayed in a command vehicle half a mile away with Martin and Ethan.

Rachel arrived with Clara's parents and a locked document case.

Clara hugged Helen so tightly her mother winced.

"Sorry," Clara said.

"Worth it."

Robert looked at Ethan and said nothing.

That silence hurt him more than anger would have.

Rachel placed the case on the hood of the vehicle.

"Daniel's files," she said. "Bank transfers, notes, copies of checks. Enough to prove Harbor existed before Robert's company was sold."

"And enough to prove murder?" Clara asked.

Rachel shook her head.

At 5:42 p.m., police entered the summer house.

Empty.

One screen showed the hotel where Clara's parents had been staying.

Another showed Martin's office.

A third showed Clara's apartment.

"She's been watching us," Clara whispered.

Then an officer found a digital recorder on the desk.

The file date was twenty-two years old.

Daniel's voice came first.

"Olivia, if anything happens to me, copies go out."

Olivia's younger voice answered, "You don't understand what you're threatening."

"I understand theft."

"My husband created Harbor, not me."

"Then help me expose him."

A long silence followed.

Olivia said, "Come to the house. We'll talk."

The recording ended.

Rachel's face went white.

"That's the call."

Clara looked at the timestamp.

11:36 p.m.

Daniel crashed less than two hours later.

Then a police officer shouted from inside the house.

"We've got fresh tire tracks leaving the rear road!"

May you like

Ethan looked toward the coast.

"There's a marina back there."
