Chapter 2 - The Name on the Loan

Clara did not answer Ethan.
She handed the microphone to the stunned wedding coordinator and ran toward the pool.
Two servers had already brought towels. Robert had helped Helen to the steps, but Helen's hands were shaking so badly she could not grip the railing.
"Mom, look at me." Clara crouched beside her, soaking the hem of her gown. "Are you hurt?"
"I'm fine," Helen said automatically.
"You're not fine."
"An ambulance is coming."
Olivia marched toward them. "No ambulance is coming onto my property."
Clara rose slowly. "This isn't your property."
That stopped her.
Ethan pushed through the crowd. "What does that mean?"
Clara looked toward the mansion. "It means the venue was purchased by Sterling Hospitality six months ago using a short-term acquisition loan. The lender required outside collateral. My fund provided it."
Olivia blinked once. "Your fund?"
"Devereux Capital."
For the first time all evening, Ethan looked genuinely afraid.
He knew the name.
Every executive in the city knew the name.
Devereux Capital was private, quiet, and known for stepping into companies no bank wanted to touch. Clara had built it under her mother's maiden name while Ethan told people she was "between consulting projects."
"You said you were an adviser," he said.
"I am. To my own company."
Olivia scoffed. "Cute. You expect me to believe you own some little investment shop?"
A gray-haired man in a dark suit entered through the open gate. Martin Vale, Clara's general counsel, walked straight past the security team.
Two other attorneys followed him.
Martin stopped beside Clara. "The lender acknowledged our notice. Draws are suspended pending review."
Ethan's face drained.
"How long?" he asked.
"Long enough," Martin said, "for someone to explain why Sterling Group submitted two different versions of the same guarantee."
The air changed.
Clara stared at Ethan. "Two versions?"
Martin's expression told her this part was new.
He opened a slim black folder.
"One bears your electronic signature," he said. "The other bears a handwritten signature that also claims to be yours."
Clara's stomach tightened.
"I never signed anything by hand."
Ethan stepped back.
Olivia looked at her son.

And in that tiny movement, Clara saw it.
They both already knew.
