Chapter 10 - Vanessa Breaks

Vanessa lasted until sunrise.
Then she broke.
Not in a police interview.
In Claire’s kitchen.
She arrived wearing sunglasses, no makeup, and the same expensive coat from the boardroom. A detective waited downstairs. Vanessa had asked to speak to Claire first.
Claire almost refused.
Adrian said, “You don’t owe her anything.”
“I know.”
She let Vanessa in anyway.
Vanessa stared at Noah for a long time.
“I never wanted him hurt.”
Claire’s face turned hard. “You had his father reject him before he was born.”
“I wanted you gone.”
“That sentence is not helping.”
Vanessa sank into a chair. “My father told me you were a threat. He said if Adrian had a child with you, the trust language could expose everything.”
Adrian frowned. “What trust language?”
“The hidden shares. They were structured around bloodline claims. If another biological heir appeared, accountants might reopen the family trust.”
Claire understood. “So Noah’s existence could trigger scrutiny.”
Vanessa nodded.
Adrian’s voice went cold. “And you forged the DNA report.”
“I paid Keller to change it.”
“Why?”
“Because Dad said it was the only way to protect me.”
“From prison?”
“From you finding out who I was.”
Adrian laughed in disbelief. “You planned to marry me to hide that you were my sister?”
Vanessa began crying. “I was trapped.”
Claire snapped, “No. You were scared. Trapped people don’t always get choices. You had choices every day.”
Vanessa flinched.
Then she pulled a small recorder from her purse.
“My father keeps a private office at Hart Capital that nobody officially uses.”
“What’s on that?” Adrian asked.
“A conversation from last week.”
She pressed play.
Richard’s voice filled the kitchen.
“If Adrian refuses the merger, we activate Martin.”
Another male voice answered, “Ellis is unstable.”
“He doesn’t need to be stable. He needs to be blamed.”
Adrian stared at Vanessa.
She whispered, “They were planning to frame Martin.”
The recording continued.
Then came the line that made Adrian stop breathing.
Richard said, “Thomas was easier. One drink and his heart did the rest.”
Silence.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“I didn’t know that part was on there.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Where is your father now?”
“I don’t know.”
Claire’s phone buzzed.
A photo message.
Martin tied to a chair.
A newspaper from that morning held beside his face.
