Chapter 7 - Margaret Vale’s Confession

Adrian did not go alone.
He told Claire he was going alone.
Then he took Ortiz, two plainclothes officers, and a tracking team that stayed three blocks back.
The address led to a closed greenhouse owned by an old Vale charitable foundation.
Margaret stood among rows of dead plants in a gray coat, hands shaking around a paper cup.
“Mother.”
She looked past him. “You brought police.”
“I brought common sense.”
“You always did get that from me.”
“Did you pay Keller?”
Her eyes filled immediately.
Adrian’s anger sharpened. “Did you?”
“Yes.”
The word knocked the air out of him.
“Why?”
“To make him disappear.”
Adrian stared.
Margaret shook her head quickly. “Not kill him. I paid him to leave the state after I learned Richard was using him.”
“So the transfer came from your account.”
“Yes. But not the twenty-five thousand. I sent fifty.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because then I would have had to tell you everything else.”
Adrian’s voice rose. “You let me believe Claire lied about my son.”
Margaret looked down.
“I didn’t know about the fake DNA report until after you received it.”
“You could have called me.”
“I tried to stop Richard without exposing Vanessa.”
“Why protect her?”
Margaret’s face broke. “Because none of this is her fault.”
Adrian laughed once, bitterly. “She forged evidence, helped sabotage my company, and knew she was my half sister while planning our wedding.”
“I said none of this started with her.”
He remembered Keller’s voicemail.
“Then who started it?”
Margaret looked toward the greenhouse door.
“Your father.”
Adrian went still.
“Thomas created the trust, yes,” she said. “But he also created a second agreement with Richard. They were business partners long before anyone knew. Richard helped hide money during the company’s early years. Thomas helped Richard build Hart Capital. They tied the firms together with private guarantees.”
“Illegal?”
“Some of them.”
“How illegal?”
Margaret whispered, “Prison illegal.”
Adrian felt the room tilt.
“What does that have to do with Claire?”
“Nothing, at first.”
“At first?”
Margaret removed a key from her coat pocket.
“A storage box in Switzerland holds the original agreements. Your father thought he destroyed every copy here.”
“Why tell me now?”
“Because Richard believes the key is in your possession.”
Adrian stared at the small brass key.
Margaret put it in his palm.
“And because last night someone broke into my house looking for it.”
A gunshot cracked through the greenhouse glass.
Margaret jerked backward.
Adrian grabbed her and dropped behind a concrete planter as glass rained over them.
Outside, Ortiz shouted.
A second shot hit the wall.
Then a car engine screamed to life.
Adrian looked at his mother.
Blood spread across her sleeve.

Margaret gripped his wrist.
“Don’t trust Martin,” she whispered.
