Chapter 16 - Elaine Dawson

Claire did not run to her mother.

She stepped backward.

“Don’t.”

Elaine stopped.

She looked older than the photos Claire remembered. Silver in her dark hair. A scar near her jaw. Eyes exactly the same.

“Claire.”

“You were dead.”

“I had to be.”

“No. You chose to be.”

Elaine absorbed the words.

Adrian stayed near the door, giving Claire space while watching every movement.

Elaine placed a folder on the table.

“In 2001 I found payments moving through accounts opened in Vanessa Hart’s name. She was a child. I thought it was tax fraud. It was bigger.”

“What did you do?” Claire asked.

“I copied everything.”

“And?”

“I went to Thomas Vale.”

Adrian stiffened.

“He already knew,” Elaine continued. “He wanted out. He asked me to help build a clean evidentiary record. Two days later he died.”

Claire’s voice cracked. “So you abandoned me?”

“Richard’s people came to our house.”

“I was nineteen!”

“I know.”

“You let me bury you!”

Elaine started crying. “Because the federal agent handling me said if Richard believed I survived, he would use you to find me.”

Claire looked away.

There was no easy forgiveness waiting in that room.

Elaine opened the folder.

“Richard is desperate because the merger would have erased the last separation between Hart’s liabilities and Vale assets. Once Adrian signed, he could bury the old fraud inside restructuring.”

Adrian asked, “And the trust provision with Claire’s name?”

“Thomas set aside funds for my daughter in exchange for my testimony, in case I was killed.”

Claire looked stunned. “Why?”

“Because he felt responsible.”

“For what?”

Elaine hesitated.

That hesitation changed the room.

Claire stood. “Say it.”

Elaine looked at Adrian.

Then back at her daughter.

“Thomas believed Richard learned about the investigation because someone inside the witness team betrayed us.”

“Who?”

“The federal agent assigned to protect me.”

Ortiz frowned. “Name?”

Elaine said, “Daniel Mercer.”

Adrian knew the name.

Everyone in finance did.

Daniel Mercer was now Deputy Director of the Federal Financial Crimes Bureau.

And he had called Adrian that morning offering federal assistance.

Adrian’s phone buzzed.
