Chapter 3 - The Hidden Page

The ballroom emptied faster than a church after a fire alarm.

No public announcement was made. Martin told guests the merger had been delayed because of a technical issue. The press smelled blood anyway.

Adrian stayed in the conference room.

Claire stayed too.

Vanessa kept insisting there was an explanation.

“There is always an explanation,” Adrian said. “Start with the hidden voting-rights transfer.”

Richard Hart folded his arms. “Standard protective language.”

Martin slid the document across the table. “No. This clause gives Hart Capital temporary voting control over three Vale subsidiaries after closing. It was inserted into the execution copy this afternoon.”

“By whom?” Adrian asked.

Martin looked toward Richard. “The file came from Hart Capital’s outside counsel.”

Richard’s face did not move.

Claire’s baby began to cry.

She stood and turned away, bouncing him gently.

Adrian watched her without meaning to.

He had missed this. Six weeks of this. Feeding. Crying. Sleepless nights. The shape of his son’s hand around one finger.

If Claire was right.

If.

He hated himself for needing that word.

Claire looked over. “His name is Noah.”

Adrian swallowed. “I know.”

“No. You knew the name I texted you before you blocked me. You don’t know him.”

The truth hit cleanly.

Vanessa stood. “This has gone far enough.”

She reached for her purse.

Martin stepped in front of the door. “No one leaves until we preserve every document related to tonight’s signing.”

Vanessa stared at him. “You can’t hold me here.”

“No,” Adrian said. “But if you leave, every server log, access record, financial transfer, and camera feed from the last ninety days gets preserved before your car reaches the bridge.”

Richard snapped, “Are you threatening my daughter?”

Adrian turned. “I’m protecting my company.”

Claire said quietly, “You should protect your family too.”

Adrian looked at Noah again.

At 1:14 a.m., a forensic accountant joined by video. At 1:32, Martin found the document metadata. The hidden page had been added by a user account belonging to Vanessa’s assistant.

At 1:41, the assistant stopped answering calls.

At 1:52, Claire finally stood to leave.

Adrian followed her into the hallway.

“Where are you going?”

“Home.”

“Claire, wait.”

She turned. “For what?”

He had no good answer.

“I want another DNA test.”

Her face went cold.

“Of course you do.”

“I need to know.”

“You needed to know before you threw me out of your life.”

He took the hit.

Then Claire reached into the bag one more time.

“I already did one yesterday.”

She handed him a sealed lab receipt.

“The results will be ready in the morning.”

Adrian looked at the paper.

Claire walked away.

Then his phone buzzed.

Unknown number.
