Chapter 5 - The Secret Their Fathers Buried

Richard crossed the room so fast that Martin stepped between him and Claire.

“Who gave you that document?” Richard demanded again.

Claire did not move. “Why does it matter if it’s fake?”

Richard stopped.

Adrian looked at him. “Answer her.”

Vanessa had gone white. “Dad?”

Richard turned to his daughter. “Do not say anything.”

That was answer enough.

Adrian stood. “You knew.”

Richard’s mouth tightened.

“You knew she was my father’s daughter.”

“It is more complicated than that.”

“Try me.”

Richard stared at the board members gathering near the glass doors. Then at Martin. Then at Claire.

Finally he said, “Your father had an affair with Evelyn before you were born.”

Vanessa whispered, “Mom?”

Richard ignored her.

“Thomas promised it would end. It didn’t. When Evelyn became pregnant, he wanted to acknowledge the child.”

Adrian felt sick. “And you stopped him.”

“I raised Vanessa.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Richard slammed a palm on the table. “I protected two families!”

Claire laughed sharply. “By arranging for Adrian to marry his half sister?”

Vanessa turned on her. “Shut up.”

Claire didn’t blink. “You knew too, didn’t you?”

Vanessa’s eyes flickered.

Adrian saw it.

“Vanessa.”

She backed away. “I found out six months ago.”

The room exploded with voices.

Adrian barely heard them.

Six months ago.

The engagement was eight months ago.

“You knew,” he said.

Vanessa began crying. “I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

“I don’t know.”

“Before or after the wedding?”

Her silence answered him.

Adrian’s voice went flat. “Why keep the engagement?”

Vanessa looked at Richard.

Richard said, “This is not a conversation for a boardroom.”

“No,” Adrian replied. “It’s exactly the conversation for a boardroom, because you tied it to a three-billion-dollar merger.”

Martin’s associate entered carrying a laptop. “We found something.”

He connected it to the screen.

A corporate trust appeared.

VALE LEGACY HOLDINGS.

Adrian frowned. “What is that?”

Martin read silently, then swore under his breath.

“Your father created it twenty-six years ago.”

“For what?”

Martin looked at Vanessa.

“To hold eight percent of Vale International for an unacknowledged biological child.”

Adrian stared at the screen.

Vanessa whispered, “Eight percent?”

Richard closed his eyes.

Claire understood first.

“This was never just about marrying Adrian,” she said.

Adrian looked at Richard.

“It was about combining her hidden shares with Hart Capital.”

Richard said nothing.

Martin scrolled lower.

Then froze.

“There’s a condition.”

“What condition?” Adrian asked.

Martin looked up.

“If Thomas Vale’s biological child ever makes a claim to the trust, control of those shares is frozen pending verification.”

Vanessa’s phone buzzed.

She looked down.

Her face drained.

Adrian grabbed the phone before she could hide it.
