Chapter 14 - The Room Full of People

The hearing room was not large enough for the anger inside it.
Maya Keene sat at the witness table in a dark blazer. Lena sat behind her beside Rina. Noah Ortiz waited near the back. Colter was represented by counsel. Derek sat under guard with his attorney.
Colonel Hale observed from one side.
Major Pryce was absent pending separate proceedings.
Maya watched the full video on a large screen without looking away.
When it ended, the investigating officer asked, “Is that an accurate recording?”
“Yes.”
“Did you strike Specialist Vaughn?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he grabbed me twice and Staff Sergeant Colter blocked the door.”
Derek’s attorney objected to characterization.
The officer overruled.
“Afterward, they showed only the part where I hit him. I was told if I fought the disciplinary action, I could lose benefits and face charges. My mother was sick. I was exhausted. I signed what they put in front of me.”
Her voice stayed steady until she looked at Ellis.
He was sitting in the second row.
“You had the whole thing.”
“Yes.”
“You watched them call me violent.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me apologize to people who knew I had been trapped.”
Ellis’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Maya nodded once.
“That’s all I needed to hear.”
The next witness was Lena.
Derek watched her walk forward.
For the first time since the mess hall, he did not look amused.
She described every complaint. Every threat. Every missing record.
His attorney asked, “Private Mercer, isn’t it true you anticipated a confrontation in the mess hall?”
“Yes.”
“And you prepared a complaint before it happened?”
“Yes.”
“So you expected Specialist Vaughn to act badly.”
“Yes.”
“Could that expectation have influenced your interpretation?”
“I expected rain because the sky was already black.”
A few people shifted in their seats.
The attorney tried again. “You could have sat somewhere else.”
Lena’s eyes hardened.
“So could he.”
The questioning ended soon after.
Outside the room, a reporter stood beyond the restricted hallway.
No one had officially announced the hearing.
“Private Mercer!” she called. “Do you have a comment on allegations that senior leaders suppressed complaints?”
Reed immediately moved Lena away.
Hale turned toward public affairs.
“Who leaked this?”
Then every phone in the hallway buzzed at once.
A national news outlet had just published a story.
The headline included one phrase from the mess hall video.

WRONG TABLE.
And beneath it was Lena’s photograph.
