Chapter 9 - The Person Above Him

Rina arrived at Fort Halbrook the next morning in civilian clothes.

She was twenty-seven, sharp-eyed, and carried herself like someone who had learned to notice exits before chairs.

Lena met her in a conference room.

For several seconds, neither woman spoke.

Then Rina said, “You’re taller than I expected.”

Lena almost laughed.

It was the first normal sentence anyone had said to her in days.

Derek had harassed her for months. Colter had minimized it. But the person who frightened her most was retired Sergeant Major Paul Kessler, now Raymond Vaughn’s security director.

Kessler came to post often.

“He called me after I filed,” Rina said.

Reed frowned. “How did he get your number?”

“I never found out.”

“What did he say?”

“He told me careers were fragile. He knew my mother had cancer. He knew I was trying to get reassigned closer to home. Then he said maybe he could help if I stopped causing problems for ‘good soldiers.’”

Hale’s eyes went cold.

“Did he help with the reassignment?”

“Yes.”

“After you withdrew?”

Rina nodded.

“Three days later.”

It was payment.

Rina produced old text messages from Kessler.

Another: SOME BATTLES AREN’T WORTH YOUR UNIFORM.

Reed photographed them.

“I copied my phone before I changed numbers.”

“What’s on it?”

“One voicemail I never gave anyone.”

They played it.

Kessler’s voice filled the room.

“Rina, I’m telling you this because I’m trying to protect you. Raymond takes attacks on his family personally. Derek will be here long after your complaint is forgotten. Think about what you want your future to look like.”

Hale stood by the window, furious in a way that looked almost calm.

“This goes beyond my command now.”

Reed nodded. “Yes, sir.”

By noon, CID had warrants in motion for Kessler’s devices and records connected to the suspected arson.

But Kessler was already moving.

At 1247, his attorney called and announced Kessler would surrender voluntarily at 1500.

At 1538, his car was found abandoned near the airport.

At 1605, a passenger manifest showed Paul Kessler had boarded a flight under his own name.

Destination: Washington, D.C.

“Why would a man running from CID fly straight toward the Pentagon?”

Reed’s answer came slowly.

“Maybe he isn’t running away.”

May you like

She looked at Lena.

“Maybe he’s running to someone.”
