Chapter 15 - When the Story Escaped the Gate

By dinner, Fort Halbrook was surrounded by news vans.

By midnight, Lena’s face was everywhere.

Some stories called her brave.

Others called her manipulative.

A few online accounts claimed she had staged the entire mess hall incident for attention.

“Stop reading it.”

“I’m not reading comments.”

“You’re staring at the screen like you want to fight it.”

Lena set the phone down.

Her mother had called three times.

Lena had not answered because she did not know how to explain that a private humiliation had become public property.

FAMOUS NOW?

A second followed.

HOPE IT WAS WORTH IT.

Lena handed the phone to the MP outside her room.

Her hands shook.

Tessa sat beside her.

“You can be scared and still be right.”

Lena laughed once without humor. “I’d rather be right without being scared.”

“Yeah. Me too.”

The next morning, senior command announced an independent review of complaint handling at Fort Halbrook.

Colonel Hale’s authority over parts of the investigation was temporarily limited to prevent conflicts.

Privately, he told Lena, “This may get worse before it gets clean.”

“Will it get clean?”

Hale took a second too long.

“I intend to find out.”

Meanwhile, Raymond Vaughn issued a statement denying any attempt to influence military discipline. He called the contractor van’s presence near the records building “routine operational activity.”

CID disagreed.

Martin Vale, the driver, changed his story after investigators showed him the accelerant analysis.

He claimed he did not know what was inside.

“Who gave it to you?” Molina asked.

Vale stared at the table.

“Raymond.”

By afternoon, federal investigators joined CID.

Then a second leak hit the press.

Nobody outside the investigation was supposed to have it.

Ellis was the only person known to possess the original copy before turning it over.

Hale found him alone in the chapel.

“Did you release it?”

“Yes.”

Hale’s expression hardened. “You compromised an active investigation.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

Ellis’s voice broke.

“Because I buried it once.”

May you like

He stood.

“And I couldn’t survive being the reason it disappeared twice.”
