Chapter 17 - The General’s Favor

The name Derek gave investigators was Major General Stephen Caldwell, deputy commander of a regional support command.
No one announced it publicly.
No one wanted to believe it privately.
Derek claimed his father had funded a foundation Caldwell supported and arranged consulting opportunities for people close to him.
In return, Raymond received access.
Not direct orders.
Access.
Phone calls returned.
Contract issues handled quietly.
Names moved to the top or bottom of lists.
It looked like favors people could explain individually.
Federal investigators began verifying Derek’s claims.
Others did not.
One email from Raymond Vaughn to Kessler read: CALDWELL SAYS RUSK WILL KEEP HALE FROM OVERREACTING.
Another, sent after Lena’s second complaint, read: THE GIRL NEEDS TO LEARN THIS ISN’T COLLEGE. FIX IT BEFORE SHE MAKES NOISE.
Lena read the message in a secure room.
“The girl.”
“You don’t have to keep reading.”
“Yes, I do.”
“No, you don’t.”
Lena looked up.
Reed’s voice softened. “Evidence doesn’t become more true because you hurt yourself with it.”
That stopped her.
Outside, Noah Ortiz waited in the hallway.
He was facing administrative action for participating in the recording scheme, though his cooperation was being considered.
“I’m probably getting busted down,” he said.
Lena did not offer comfort he had not earned.
“Maybe.”
“I deserve some of it.”
“Probably.”
Then he grew serious. “I keep thinking about the first day. If one person had stood up when Vaughn started, maybe none of this gets this far.”
Lena shook her head.
“Don’t make it that simple.”
“What do you mean?”
“One person standing up matters. But systems shouldn’t require a hero every time somebody acts wrong.”
Noah nodded slowly.
That evening, Colonel Hale was called to testify before a senior review panel.
“I may not be in command here much longer.”
She looked up. “Because you failed?”
“Because command is responsibility. Some of this happened on my watch even if I didn’t know.”
Lena stood.
“Sir, there’s a difference between not knowing and not wanting to know.”
Then his phone rang.
His face changed as he listened.
When the call ended, he said, “Caldwell has been suspended.”
Lena exhaled.
But Hale was still staring at the phone.
“That’s not all.”
May you like
He looked at her.
“Raymond Vaughn is missing.”
