Chapter 4 - Everybody Saw Something

By sunrise, Fort Halbrook had changed.

Not officially.

The flags still rose. Trucks still moved. Formation still happened.

But rumors traveled faster than orders.

The mess hall video had spread before command could collect every copy. Somebody had sent it to three group chats. Someone else had screen-recorded it. Derek’s face, Lena on the floor, and Colonel Hale’s words were now impossible to erase.

The video created witnesses.

Captain Reed began interviews at 0700.

The first soldier claimed he had been looking away.

The third admitted Derek kicked the table but insisted it was “probably an accident.”

Then Private Noah Ortiz walked in.

He was nineteen, nervous, and one of the soldiers who had laughed.

Reed asked him to sit.

“I laughed because everybody else did,” he said.

Reed waited.

Noah’s eyes dropped. “That’s not an excuse.”

“No,” Reed said. “It isn’t.”

He swallowed. “But I saw more than what happened yesterday.”

Noah described Derek cornering Lena near the maintenance bay. He described Staff Sergeant Colter watching from ten feet away. He described Colter telling Derek, “Handle your own problems somewhere people can’t complain about it.”

Reed looked up. “Those exact words?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Why didn’t you report it?”

Noah’s face flushed.

“Because Colter wrote my counseling statements. Because Vaughn was his favorite. Because I wanted to finish my contract without becoming the next target.”

Then he took out his phone.

“I also have this.”

A voice memo.

Noah had accidentally left his recorder running after taking notes during a maintenance inspection.

Colter’s voice was clear.

“Mercer filed again?”

Derek answered, laughing. “She thinks paper matters.”

“I’ll take care of the paper. You take care of Mercer.”

Reed replayed it twice.

Colonel Hale heard it once and stood so fast his chair rolled backward.

“Get CID involved,” he said.

The investigation was no longer about harassment.

At 0932, Molina received another call.

Colter had been found.

Not hiding.

Not fleeing.

He was sitting in the back pew of a small church outside town, waiting for military police.

And when they approached, he raised both hands and said one thing.

“I’ll talk, but not until you protect me from Vaughn’s father.”
