Chapter 13 - The Clause They Forgot

Ryan survived surgery.

The bullet missed his heart by less than an inch.

Grant’s people failed to get the flash drive.

Inside the MERCY folder were invoices, private emails, and one scanned legal opinion written three years before Claire met Ethan.

It concerned the Ashford trust.

Nora read it twice.

“Grant knew the heir clause could be activated if Amelia or her descendant appeared.”

Ethan leaned over her shoulder. “Why does that matter to Vale Group?”

“Because Ashford owns eleven percent of Vale Medical Logistics.”

Claire looked between them. “So if I inherit Ashford shares, I also gain voting power in part of Ethan’s company.”

Nora nodded. “Enough to influence the Vale board.”

Claire understood the implication.

Their supposedly random contract marriage suddenly looked very convenient.

She turned to Ethan.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Before we married?”

“No.”

“Did your grandfather?”

Silence.

Ethan’s face hardened.

They opened his grandfather’s sealed trust correspondence.

One letter had been withheld by Malcolm Vale.

It mentioned Amelia Ashford by name.

Ethan read aloud: “If Amelia’s daughter survives, the safest alliance may be one no board can easily break.”

Claire felt cold.

“Your grandfather wanted this.”

“He died before I knew you existed.”

“But Malcolm may have known.”

“And if he knew Ryan was pressuring you out of Boston...”

“He could have made sure we met.”

For the first time, Claire wondered whether the hotel cancellation, Ethan’s presence, and even Ryan’s warning had been pieces on someone else’s board.

She hated the feeling.

“I’m done being arranged.”

She removed her wedding ring.

Ethan did not stop her.

“Claire.”

“I believe you didn’t know. But I need one thing in my life that wasn’t designed by dead men, powerful families, or frightened boyfriends.”

She placed the ring on the table.

“Our six months are almost over anyway.”

Ethan looked at the ring, not at her.

“If that’s what you want, I’ll sign the termination.”

The answer hurt more than she expected.

Claire moved into Thomas’s guarded townhouse that night.

At 2:13 a.m., her phone lit up.

Ethan.

She let it ring once before answering.

His voice was strained.

“Don’t go to the window.”

Claire froze.

“Why?”

May you like

“Because Malcolm is outside.”

A second later, the front door exploded inward.
