Chapter 7 - The Daughter Who Vanished

Claire booked the first flight to Ohio.
Ethan canceled it.
She stormed into his office. “You do not get to control where I go.”
“No. But I do get to tell you that two men are watching the Akron airport and another is parked outside your father’s house.”
Claire went still.
“Then we drive.”
“We’re already going.”
The armored SUV left Boston before dawn.
During the ten-hour drive, Thomas called from a prepaid phone. He had left his house through a neighbor’s yard and was hiding at a church outside Pittsburgh.
He told Claire the truth in pieces.
Amelia Ashford had been the only daughter of pharmaceutical founder Edmund Ashford. In 1993, she discovered internal safety reports showing that a profitable blood-thinning drug caused fatal complications in a small group of patients. Her older brother, Victor, wanted the reports buried until a merger closed.
Amelia refused.
Then she became pregnant.
“She believed somebody inside the company would use you against her,” Thomas said. “Lydia was her closest friend from nursing school. She gave you to Lydia for one week.”
Claire stared out the window. “And never came back.”
“Her car was found in the river. No body.”
“What did Lydia give you?”
“A key.”
“To what?”
“I don’t know. She made me promise I’d only give it to you if the Ashfords came looking.”
At the church, Claire hugged Thomas so hard he grunted.
He was sixty-eight now, gray-haired and shaking, but still smelled like coffee and cedar the way he had when she was a child.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
“You were my dad before this. You’re my dad after it.”
Thomas cried then.
From his coat lining, he removed a small brass key stamped 317.
Ethan studied it. “Bank box?”
Thomas shook his head. “Lydia never said.”
Claire turned it over.
Tiny letters were engraved beneath the number.
SOUTH STATION.
Back in Boston, they found locker 317 in an old storage corridor scheduled for demolition.
The key still worked.
Inside was a sealed metal case.
Claire opened it.
There were trial reports, a microcassette, and a notarized birth certificate naming Amelia Ashford as Claire’s mother.
Beneath those papers rested a photograph taken twenty-nine years ago.
Amelia stood beside a much younger Grant Holloway.
Vanessa’s father.

On the back, Amelia had written:
IF I DISAPPEAR, GRANT KNOWS WHY.
