Chapter 15 - Vanessa's Real Father

The answer came from Amelia.
When Claire showed her Vanessa’s photograph, Amelia began to cry.
“Victor’s girl.”
Claire sat beside her. “Vanessa is Victor’s daughter?”
Amelia nodded.
Thirty years earlier, Victor Ashford had an affair with Grant Holloway’s wife, Caroline. Grant learned the truth after Vanessa was born but raised her as his own to avoid scandal and preserve a business alliance.
That secret explained the false DNA test.
Grant used Vanessa’s tissue because she carried Ashford DNA.
Victor allowed it because exposing the truth would destroy both families.
Vanessa did not know.
Claire insisted on telling her personally.
They met in a private conference room at Halcyon under federal supervision.
Vanessa laughed when Claire explained.
Then Claire placed the DNA report on the table.
Vanessa stopped laughing.
“No.”
“Ask Grant.”
“He’s my father.”
“He raised you. That part doesn’t disappear because biology changed.” Claire knew exactly how important that distinction was. “But Victor is your biological father.”
Vanessa’s face collapsed in slow motion.
Ryan had betrayed Claire for access to Grant Holloway’s family.
Vanessa had built her identity around being Grant’s daughter.
Now both women were staring at lives shaped by men who had hidden the truth.
“I hated you,” Vanessa whispered.
“I noticed.”
“I thought you came to take everything.”
“I came to Boston for an interview and an idiot.”
A broken laugh escaped Vanessa.
Then she pushed a key card across the table.
“Grant has a private archive below Halcyon’s Cambridge facility. He goes there whenever he thinks the government is close.”
“What’s inside?”
“Records he never trusted computers to hold.”
Claire took the card.
Vanessa grabbed her hand.
“There’s something else. He knows Amelia can testify now.”
Claire’s pulse quickened.
“What is he planning?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“He moved up the demolition schedule for the old Halcyon research wing.”
“When?”
“Tonight.”
Claire stood.
Vanessa whispered, “That’s where Amelia crashed thirty years ago.”
Claire turned back.

Vanessa’s voice broke.
“And I think her original evidence is still inside.
