Chapter 9 - Her Mother's Voice

Claire opened the file with trembling fingers.

It contained one audio recording.

Static filled the boardroom speakers.

Then a woman began to speak.

“If Claire ever hears this, then I failed to come home.”

Claire forgot everyone else in the room.

Amelia’s voice was low, urgent, unmistakably alive in a way photographs could never be.

She described falsified adverse-event reports, secret payments to trial investigators, and a shell company used to move money through Halcyon’s predecessor.

Then she named two men.

Victor Ashford.

Grant Holloway.

Ryan stood. “This is fabricated.”

Amelia continued.

“Grant told me the merger mattered more than five dead patients. Victor said family loyalty meant silence.”

The board chair ordered security to close the doors.

Claire stared at Ryan. “You knew.”

“I knew nothing about this.”

“But you knew about the deleted patients.”

Ryan looked at the floor.

That was enough.

Northbridge reinstated Claire immediately and referred the evidence to federal investigators.

Outside the building, reporters crowded the sidewalk.

Ethan tried to shield Claire through the cameras.

She stopped.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“I’ve spent my entire life letting other people decide what version of me gets heard.”

Claire stepped toward the microphones.

“My name is Claire Bennett,” she said. “That is the name of the man who raised me, and I’m keeping it. I have reason to believe my biological mother, Dr. Amelia Ashford, exposed serious misconduct before she disappeared. I intend to find out what happened to her.”

Questions exploded.

One reporter shouted, “Are you claiming Ashford Pharmaceutical belongs to you?”

Claire blinked.

Ethan’s attorney Nora appeared beside them.

“Claire,” she whispered. “We need to leave.”

In the car, Nora opened a corporate registry on her tablet.

Edmund Ashford’s will had placed forty-eight percent of Ashford Pharmaceutical into a trust for Amelia or Amelia’s lawful descendants.

The trust had remained frozen because Amelia was presumed dead without a verified heir.

Claire stared at the number.

“If the birth certificate is authenticated,” Nora said, “you are not just an heir.”

Ethan finished the sentence.

“You’re the largest individual shareholder.”

Claire laughed from pure disbelief.

Then Nora’s phone buzzed.

She read the message and went pale.

“What?” Claire asked.

Nora turned the screen around.

Victor Ashford had just called an emergency board meeting.
