Chapter 16 - The Building That Had to Burn

The old research wing was scheduled to come down at midnight.

Claire, Ethan, Nora, and federal agents entered at 10:40 p.m. with Vanessa’s key card and a warrant signed twenty minutes earlier.

The basement smelled like dust and chemicals.

Behind a false wall, they found Grant Holloway’s archive.

Boxes filled the room from floor to ceiling.

Trial deaths. Bribed investigators. Off-book security payments. Confidential settlements.

And one folder marked ASHFORD, AMELIA.

Claire opened it.

Inside was a police photograph of Amelia’s wrecked car.

A second photograph showed Grant standing beside the vehicle before emergency crews arrived.

Another document listed a payment to a tow operator for “river disposal.”

Ethan went still.

“He tried to put the car in the river after she survived.”

A federal agent cursed softly.

Then the lights died.

Emergency alarms began to pulse.

Ethan grabbed Claire’s hand.

“Out.”

Smoke rolled through the far corridor.

Grant had started the demolition early.

Explosive charges boomed somewhere above them.

Concrete dust filled the archive.

Agents formed a chain, carrying boxes toward the stairs.

Claire saw a small steel cabinet bolted to the floor.

“Leave it!” Ethan shouted.

She should have.

Instead, she used Vanessa’s key card.

The cabinet opened.

Inside sat one microcassette recorder and a sealed envelope addressed to Edmund Ashford.

Another explosion shook the ceiling.

Claire grabbed both.

A beam crashed between her and Ethan.

“Claire!”

“I’m fine!”

She crawled beneath a pipe as flames climbed the wall.

Someone caught her arm and pulled her through the smoke.

Not Ethan.

Victor Ashford.

“What are you doing here?” Claire coughed.

“Trying to stop Grant from destroying the proof that ruins both of us.”

He dragged her toward an emergency tunnel.

Ethan appeared behind them with two agents.

Outside, firefighters swarmed the property.

Victor surrendered without resistance.

Claire stared at the envelope she had saved.

Inside was a handwritten confession from Victor.

He admitted falsifying the drug reports.

He admitted helping Grant hide Amelia after the crash.

But the final paragraph made Claire look up sharply.

Victor had tried to confess in 1995.

Grant threatened to kill Claire if he did.

At the bottom, Victor had written:

THERE IS ONE MORE PERSON WHO KNEW EVERYTHING.

The name underneath was familiar.

Thomas Bennett.
