Chapter 13 - Rosa's Truth

Rosa sat upright in a hospital bed with a bruise along her cheekbone and a bandage over one wrist. Nathan stopped in the doorway.
"I'm so sorry," he said.
"You didn't drive that car," Rosa answered. "And you didn't tell me to keep quiet."
She explained how a dark sedan followed her from the bus station. She drove toward a police substation, but the other driver cut across her lane. Her car struck a curb and spun into a barrier. She hadn't seen the driver's face.
A deputy had already taken her account. Nora asked permission before discussing the documents.
"Hannah asked me to keep the box," Rosa said. "She knew your mother would look for it. I moved it after the funeral."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I tried. Three times. The first time, your mother said you were on medication and couldn't be disturbed. The second time, Gerald called me a thief. The third time, Lucy asked me not to leave her alone with her grandmother."
Rosa wiped her eyes. "I stayed for Lucy."
Nathan thanked her, and the words felt much too small.
"There's something else," Rosa said. "The pantry camera? I installed a second one after I found Lucy crying in there. Not hidden from everyone—just one your mother didn't manage. It recorded to my old phone."
She directed them to a cloud backup that Nora helped retrieve using Rosa's own account. The footage showed Evelyn ordering Lucy into the pantry and later telling a visitor that the girl was "learning her place." It also showed Rosa reopening the door and comforting Lucy.
The visitor in the video was Gerald Vale. He looked straight toward the camera before turning his back.
Nora's face tightened. "That's evidence of what he saw and did not stop."
As they left the hospital, Nathan received a message from the private school Lucy attended.
Your daughter's enrollment has been withdrawn at the request of her legal guardian, Evelyn Whitmore. Please arrange collection of her belongings.
"She's still trying," Nathan said.
Nora read the message. "Then we answer with documents, not fury."
