Chapter 2 - The Empty Chair

Nathan forgot the broken glass the moment he heard Lucy's words.

He crouched so their faces were level. "Tell me."

Lucy stared past him at Evelyn. "Not here."

"She's being dramatic," Evelyn snapped. "Nathan, look at this mess. You embarrassed the whole family."

"You made my daughter eat beside a dog. I'm not worried about the silverware."

His brother-in-law, Peter, rose halfway from his chair. "We didn't know you were coming back tonight."

"Apparently." Nathan turned toward the relatives. "Any of you want to explain why nobody stopped this?"

Nobody moved. His younger cousin Mason stared at a puddle of gravy. Caroline's nine-year-old son, Max, looked sick.

Nathan carried Lucy into the hallway, away from the voices. Duke followed, nails clicking across the polished floor. Lucy was shaking. He wrapped his jacket around her shoulders, though the house was warm.

"Has she made you do that before?"

Lucy nodded. "When you're gone."

"How many times?"

She held up three fingers, lowered one, then whispered, "I stopped counting."

His chest tightened. He had been traveling every week since his wife, Hannah, died fourteen months earlier. Evelyn had insisted the house needed a steady hand. He had mistaken her confidence for kindness.

"I'm taking you upstairs to pack. You're staying with me tonight."

"This is our house, Dad."

"Then I'll take you somewhere safe until I make it safe again."

She reached into her jeans pocket and brought out a small brass key hanging on red string.

"Mom gave me this before the hospital. She said if anybody ever told me I didn't belong here, I should open the blue box in her closet. Grandma took the box away."

Nathan knew the blue box. Hannah kept her family letters in it. He hadn't seen it since the funeral.

"Where is it now?"

"Grandma put it in the room with the locked door." Lucy swallowed. "And, Dad? She said if I told you, she'd show the judge why you shouldn't have me."

Behind them, someone stepped onto the hallway runner.

Evelyn said, "Put that key down, Lucy. Right now."
