Chapter 18 - The Hearing

The hearing room was smaller than Nathan expected. There was no jury, no dramatic audience, only a judge, lawyers, a clerk, and the people whose choices had brought them there.

Evelyn wore a charcoal jacket and pearls. She didn't look at Lucy. The child waited elsewhere with a designated support person while the attorneys discussed how to present her evidence appropriately.

Evelyn's lawyer began with the destroyed dinner table and Nathan's travel schedule. Nathan answered questions without excuses.

"I overturned the table," he said. "I regret it. I took my daughter to safety immediately afterward and sought legal advice and support."

The judge asked about Lucy's care while he traveled. He acknowledged relying too heavily on his mother and described the new childcare arrangements he'd made, including reduced work travel and an independent caregiver chosen with Lucy's input.

Then his attorney presented the house rules, witness accounts, and authenticated video evidence. Caroline testified that she had watched her mother isolate Lucy and had failed to intervene. Rosa described the pantry incidents and her efforts to comfort the child. The school confirmed the disputed withdrawal authorization was not submitted by Nathan.

Evelyn's attorney objected to parts of the estate dispute as outside the narrow issue of the day's hearing. The judge agreed, keeping the focus on Lucy's immediate welfare.

When Evelyn spoke, she called her behavior strict discipline. "I believed the child needed structure. Her father was never there."

The judge asked, "What educational or safety purpose was served by requiring a ten-year-old to eat beside a dog while the rest of her family sat at the table?"

Evelyn looked at her hands. "I was trying to teach gratitude."

"That did not answer my question."

By late afternoon, the judge denied the request to remove Lucy from Nathan's care, ordered boundaries on Evelyn's contact pending further review, and directed both parties to comply with the next scheduled proceedings. It was immediate relief, not the end of every case.

Nathan exhaled for what felt like the first time in a week.

In the hallway, Evelyn came toward him.

"Hannah had one last request," she said. "And you're not going to like what it says."
