Chapter 19 - Hannah's Last Request

Nathan did not take a single step closer to his mother.

"Give it to my lawyer," he said.

For a moment Evelyn looked offended that he would not obey. Then she reached into her handbag and produced a yellowed envelope. Nora accepted it, documented the handoff, and arranged to verify its provenance before anyone relied on it.

The envelope contained a short page written by Hannah several months before she died. Her handwriting matched the notes in the blue box. It was not a secret transfer of wealth or a last-minute command to forgive Evelyn.

It was a request concerning Lucy.

If I am not there for her birthdays, please keep the family table open. Make room for her questions, her sadness, her laughter, and her friends. If anyone makes her feel like a guest in her own home, be the person who pulls out her chair.

Nathan read it twice. Then he folded it carefully and cried.

Evelyn stood across the room, silent. Finally she said, "Your father left us with debts. I spent my life making sure this family never looked poor again. I thought if Hannah gave that money away, everything would collapse."

"So you took it," Nathan said.

"I told myself I was borrowing it."

"And Lucy? Was she another problem you thought you could manage?"

Evelyn's expression broke, but he could not tell whether she was grieving, ashamed, or simply afraid. "She looks so much like Hannah. Every time she asked why her mother was gone, I heard all the things Hannah said to me. I wanted her to stop reminding me."

Nathan stood. "She is a child. You don't get to make her carry your guilt."

The financial case continued after the hearing. Documents and witness accounts were submitted to authorities. Vale faced formal charges related to fraudulent transfers and forged filings, while investigators considered Evelyn's role and the circumstances of Hannah's fall. Nathan refused to turn uncertain facts into certainty just because he wanted answers.

Weeks passed. Funds began to be frozen pending the proceedings. Harbor House could continue operating under temporary independent oversight.

Then, on the morning of Lucy's eleventh birthday, a letter arrived from the estate attorney.

It said investigators had found an additional account in Hannah's name—and on it was a gift intended specifically for Lucy.
