Chapter 17 - The Staircase

Caroline recorded the time of the call and immediately told Nora what Evelyn had said. She did not pretend the remark proved what had happened. It raised another question, one that investigators would have to answer.

By morning, detectives had interviewed the paramedic who responded to Hannah's fall. His old report noted conflicting accounts of where people had been when she fell. He remembered Evelyn insisting she heard the impact from the kitchen. Hospital records showed bruising on Hannah's forearm consistent with being gripped, though they could not establish who caused it.

Nathan read the information in a lawyer's conference room, surrounded by the kind of quiet that makes every sound hurt.

"She could have stopped the argument," he said. "She could have told us the truth."

Nora folded her hands. "There's still much we don't know."

"I know she lied to Hannah. And to Lucy. And to me."

The investigators had also located Gerald Vale at an airport. He was questioned in connection with suspected financial misconduct and the forged documents; further action would depend on evidence and prosecutorial review. The contractor linked to the silver sedan was also being interviewed.

That afternoon Rosa called. "I've been thinking about Hannah's recording. There's one part you haven't heard."

The final audio file was stored under an ordinary name: groceries_list.mp3. Nathan had overlooked it.

Hannah spoke quietly, apparently recording herself in the hospital.

"Evelyn grabbed my arm on the stairs. I pulled away. I don't know if she meant for me to fall. What I do know is she told me afterward that if I accused her, Nathan would lose the family, and Lucy would grow up alone. I was too sick to fight that lie. I hope you will."

Nathan covered his face. He missed Hannah so fiercely he couldn't speak.

Then Lucy appeared in the doorway. She had heard none of the recording, only his grief.

"Dad?"

He held out his arms, and she ran into them.

His phone lit up on the table. The subject line of the new court filing read: EMERGENCY MOTION TO REMOVE CHILD FROM FATHER'S CARE.
