Chapter 15 - The Money Before the Fall

The note had been tucked into the lining of Lucy's old stuffed rabbit. Hannah had shown Lucy where she kept small surprises there, years earlier. After the funeral Lucy found the note and hid it, frightened that Evelyn would take it away.

Nathan read it with Nora the following morning. Hannah had discovered transfers from Harbor House's reserve fund, made while she was recovering from an earlier hospitalization. Someone had approved them using her electronic credentials.

She demanded an independent audit and threatened to bring the records to authorities. Two days later came the argument in the study and the fall.

"We need to distinguish what we know from what we fear," Nora said. "The transfers are documentable. The fall is a separate question."

Simon obtained a set of bank confirmations directly through the appropriate legal channels. They supported Hannah's concern: payments had flowed into a consulting company with no clear evidence of services rendered. The recipient accounts were connected to Whitmore Administrative Services and two contractors introduced by Gerald Vale.

Nathan wanted to call his mother and demand every dollar back. Instead, he let the attorneys prepare their filings and disclosures.

On Wednesday, Evelyn called him first.

"We need to stop this before it ruins us," she said.

"You mean before it exposes you."

"I've held this family together for forty years. You have no idea what I've sacrificed."

"Lucy is not one of the things you get to sacrifice."

There was a long silence. Then Evelyn said something different.

"Meet me in the conservatory at five. Alone. I'll give you Hannah's missing file."

Nora advised against going alone. Nathan agreed to meet in a public setting with counsel nearby, but Evelyn refused any witnesses. He declined. At 4:52 p.m., a courier arrived at Nora's office carrying a large white envelope.

Inside was a photocopy of Hannah's original trust schedule—and a handwritten offer from Evelyn: Withdraw the guardianship response, stop the audit, and I'll give Lucy the blue box's final letter.

Nathan turned the page over.

On the back was a photograph of Lucy asleep in Nora's living room, taken through the window the previous night.
