Chapter 12 - The Unit Behind the FenceOrtiz took a warrant team to the storage complex. Blair stayed with her mother, pacing Dana's kitchen as rain tapped the windows.

At the storage facility, investigators cataloged what looked like years of nervous housekeeping: duplicate invoices, burnished metal tools, a water-stained ledger, and three phones with dead batteries. There were grocery receipts mixed among the documents, reminders that the people involved had bought bread and milk while plotting how to bury the truth. Blair found that detail harder to bear than a dramatic villain would have been. In Dana's kitchen she stirred tea until it cooled and asked herself whether she had missed signs because she was absent or because Nolan had worked hard to conceal them. Both could be true without making her responsible for his actions.
"You can't protect everybody by standing in every doorway," Dana told her.
"I wasn't there for Mom."
"You were working. The person who hurt her made the choice. Don't take responsibility for his decisions."
Blair sat down at last.
Hours later, Ortiz called on video. Behind her stood a half-open roll-up door. Shelves held contractor documents, broken electronics, and shipping crates. In one crate officers had found a watchmaker's toolkit and a small blue folder.
"Is that it?" Blair asked.
"We don't know. It contains engineering inspections and bank transaction lists. There are also photographs of damaged bridge supports."
A second officer lifted a padded envelope. Inside was Arthur's silver travel clock, still working. It chimed softly as the minute changed.
The sound matched the noise captured on the smoke detector.
"Someone brought that clock into Mom's house," Blair said. "Why?"
A label beneath its battery compartment read: FOR BLAIR ONLY.
Ortiz called a technician. The clock contained a tiny removable memory card, hidden by a false plate. Before anyone touched it, a phone began ringing inside another sealed box.
