Chapter 19 - What Happened on the RoadNolan's account was not the final word. Investigators compared it with financial records, the old crash report, the tow driver's statement, and a recovered maintenance log for a company SUV.

Corinne asked to visit Arthur's grave after hearing about the roadside pursuit. Blair drove her on a quiet weekday morning. They brought no speeches, only a small bunch of white flowers. Corinne stood before the stone and said, 'I'm sorry I believed the wrong man.' Blair put a hand on her shoulder. 'You believed the man who was there when you needed help.' Corinne took a long breath. 'Then we know why he made sure he was there.' They stayed until the wind turned cold. On the way home, Corinne requested a stop for pie. It was the first ordinary request Blair had heard from her in weeks.
The evidence showed Arthur had driven to meet Brooks with copies of the bridge records. Nolan and Peter followed in a second vehicle, intending to recover the documents. According to Nolan, Peter tried to force Arthur to pull over. Arthur swerved, struck a guardrail, and went down an embankment.
Nolan admitted searching the damaged car for the watch box while Arthur was still inside. He said he fled when he heard sirens. Peter had later helped conceal the SUV's damage.
"Did you call for help?" Shah asked.
"No."
Blair listened to a summary with Corinne beside her. Neither spoke for a long time.
"He came to our house afterward," Corinne said. "He hugged me while I cried."
Blair felt sick. "He hugged all of us."
Ortiz did not offer comfort she couldn't guarantee. "Charges will depend on what we can prove, not merely what he says."
Months passed. Prosecutors secured guilty pleas from Peter and Brooks on several charges; Hale faced a public trial over the contract fraud and related conduct. Nolan entered a plea admitting to assault, false statements, obstruction, and his role in the scheme. The crash investigation remained separate while experts examined its cause and the failure to summon help.
At a hearing, Nolan asked to speak to Blair.
She shook her head.

Then the prosecutor handed her one last letter Arthur had written the night he died.
