Peter Vickers was taken into custody after trying to leave a leased warehouse. Hale, warned by his attorneys, agreed to an interview but denied knowledge of any false invoices.

Elise's recording did not buy Blair the satisfaction she'd imagined. Nolan's words were ugly, but they were still words from a man she had once loved. She remembered him teaching her to make coffee in a tiny apartment, laughing when she burned the toast. Then she saw Corinne's swollen eye and understood that conflicting memories did not cancel facts. Elise asked to apologize in person. Blair declined, telling Ortiz that the sister could cooperate fully with investigators without demanding forgiveness from the people she'd hurt. Boundaries, she was learning, were not revenge. They were a way of ending an argument without surrendering.

Nolan refused to speak to investigators. Then Elise gave prosecutors a recording she had made after Blair's mother went to the hospital.

"You promised nobody would get hurt," Elise said on the audio.

"I said she wouldn't get seriously hurt," Nolan answered. "She hid the file. I didn't have a choice."

"You always had a choice."

"You don't understand. Hale will take everything."

Ortiz cautioned Blair that any recording would be tested for authenticity and evaluated under applicable law. Blair did not care about the dramatic value of a confession. She cared that her mother had been called a liar.

That afternoon, Nolan requested a meeting with the prosecutor through his lawyer. Blair did not attend. A recording of his formal interview later showed him describing how Hale had threatened to expose his role in the bridge scheme unless he recovered Arthur's remaining records.

"I went to Corinne's house to find the clock," Nolan said. "She wouldn't tell me. I shoved her. She fell against the table. Peter was there. I told the cops she attacked me."

Shah asked, "Who moved Arthur's car off the road in 2015?"

Nolan stared at the tabletop for almost a minute.
