Chapter 7 - Paper Does Not Burn QuietlyOrtiz ordered the intruder to show his hands. Instead, he threw a smoke canister onto the landing. Gray smoke flooded the stairwell; the alarm began to shriek.

In the alley, Miriam gripped Blair's wrist before the paramedic helped her into the ambulance. 'Your father was scared,' she said. 'But he wasn't ashamed. Don't let them turn caution into cowardice.' Blair nodded, surprised by the force of her own grief. She had spent eleven years accepting the crash as a cruel accident because that was a story a person could survive. A deliberate cover-up was different. It meant that the past wasn't finished with them. Ortiz gave her a bottle of water and waited until she could speak. The detective did not tell her to be strong. Blair appreciated that more than she could say.
Blair covered Miriam's mouth with a scarf and led her to a rear fire exit. They stumbled into an alley where firefighters were already pulling up. Ortiz emerged coughing, carrying the seized ledger in a plastic evidence sleeve.
"He fled through a service door," she said. "We have cameras at both ends of the block."
Miriam leaned against the brick wall. "That wasn't a robbery. They knew exactly what I had."
A paramedic checked her breathing. Blair stood beside Ortiz and watched smoke stream through an upstairs window.
"Who knew we were coming?" Blair asked.
"You, me, Miriam, and the assistant."
"And whoever monitored my calls."
Ortiz nodded. "Could be. Don't assume it's someone close until we have evidence."
At the station, a technician recovered most of Miriam's cloud backups. The ledger showed suspicious transfers to a company called Harbor Light Consulting. Its registered officer was a man named Peter Vickers.
"Nolan's father?" Blair asked.
"His uncle," Ortiz said. "Died six years ago. On paper."
A scan of Peter's supposed death certificate bore a doctor's signature that didn't match hospital records. Someone had used the death to close a business trail.
Ortiz's phone rang. She listened without speaking.
"Your husband was released pending further proceedings," she said afterward. "His lawyer just produced a witness who says your mother swung first."
Blair's throat tightened. "Who?"
May you like
"Elise Vickers. And she claims she was inside the house."
