Chapter 11 - The Heir

Adrian refused to believe Vanessa had betrayed him.

That was almost poetic.

He had punished me because he trusted her word over mine.

Now his lawyers begged him not to trust her at all.

Vanessa was six weeks pregnant.

She had told Adrian the child was his.

Marcus claimed she had also been seeing him.

There was no need for me to know which man fathered her child.

Legally, it mattered only because Adrian had referenced "our heir" in corporate planning documents.

Emotionally, it mattered because arrogance had made him careless.

He reorganized company ownership around a child whose paternity he had never verified.

Claire said:

"Do not let this become about humiliating a pregnant woman."

"I won't."

I meant it.

Vanessa had harmed me.

Her pregnancy was not the harm.

The lies were.

The drugging.

The forged documents.

The hidden companies.

I refused to become the woman cheering because another woman's life became complicated.

At the preliminary hearing, Adrian's attorney tried to portray me as vindictive.

He asked why my father withdrew credit within minutes of my call.

I answered honestly.

"Because he had guaranteed facilities without telling my husband."

"Your father intended to destroy Mr. Vale."

"No. He stopped protecting him from consequences."

The attorney raised his voice.

"Isn't that the same thing when your father controls banks?"

"No."

I looked at Adrian.

"If his company only survives while my father secretly supports it, then it was never as independent as Adrian claimed."

The judge granted an expanded asset-preservation order.

Adrian could not sell major holdings.

Vanessa's companies were frozen pending fraud review.

Marcus remained detained.

Then the prosecutor introduced the medical evidence.

My injuries.

The sedative.

The camera previews.

Adrian's voicemail:

I never meant for last night to go that far.

His attorney stopped calling the incident imaginary.

Now it was "misunderstood."

Outside court, Adrian approached me through counsel.

He looked exhausted.

"Mia."

I kept walking.

"Amelia."

That made me stop.

He had never used my full name before.

"I didn't know who you were."

I turned.

"That is not your defense."

"I mean--"

"You thought I was powerless. That's why you believed you could do it."

His face changed.

He knew I was right.

Then he whispered:

"Vanessa says your father set this whole thing up."

May you like

I almost smiled.

"She's still telling you what to believe."
