Chapter 5 - Vanessa's Story

Vanessa's statement was elegant.

That made it dangerous.

She did not claim Adrian had never touched me.

She claimed I had demanded he "discipline" me during private marital arguments before.

She framed violence as something I invited.

Something intimate.

Something consensual.

I felt physically sick reading it.

Claire watched my face.

"We can attack credibility."

"She was there."

"Yes."

"She'll say anything."

"Yes."

Dad said nothing.

That helped.

He understood this was not a board fight he could solve by buying the other side.

Officer Reyes called at 8:00 a.m.

The mansion security system had been seized.

Cameras covered the entrance hall.

I closed my eyes.

"There are cameras?"

"You didn't know?"

"Adrian told me interior cameras were disabled after we married."

"They weren't."

The footage existed.

But there was a problem.

The recording from 8:04 p.m. to 8:31 p.m. had been deleted remotely.

My incident happened inside that window.

Claire asked:

"Who had admin access?"

"Mr. Vale. The security company. And one executive account."

"Whose?"

Officer Reyes answered.

"Vanessa Cole."

I stared at the phone.

Vanessa had access to my home security.

Adrian had never mentioned it.

Dad's investigator recovered cloud metadata showing the deletion request occurred seven minutes after my call to Dad.

Vanessa had known exactly what she needed erased.

But the system also kept low-resolution motion previews for smart-home automation.

No audio.

One image every eight seconds.

Enough.

The preview showed me on the floor.

Adrian standing over me.

Vanessa watching.

The riding crop visible in his hand.

Then a later frame showed me reaching for the phone.

The next showed Vanessa leaning toward Adrian.

Then she walked toward the security panel.

Claire enlarged the timestamp.

"She deleted it while you were calling your father."

I looked at Dad.

He was staring at the image with a kind of stillness I had seen only once before, when my mother died.

"Dad."

"I'm here."

"Don't do anything."

"I won't."

"Promise."

He looked at me.

"I promise."

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

YOU THINK THE CAMERA IS YOUR BEST EVIDENCE?

A second message arrived.

ASK ADRIAN WHY HE NEEDED YOU TO SIGN THE DIVORCE PAPERS TONIGHT.

May you like

Then a third.

BECAUSE TOMORROW MORNING THE MONEY MOVES.
