Chapter 14 - Adrian's Offer

Adrian wanted a deal.
He offered evidence against Vanessa and Marcus in exchange for a private divorce settlement and a public statement from me saying the incident had been "a marital conflict distorted by outsiders."
I almost admired the nerve.
"What evidence?" I asked.
"Vanessa drugged you."
"I know."
"She deleted the camera footage."
"I know."
"She forged your signature."
"We know."
He paused.
"She changed your fertility file."
That hurt even though I already suspected it.
"How involved were you?"
Silence.
"Adrian."
"I wanted certainty."
"About what?"
"Whether we could have children."
"So you let them falsify my diagnosis?"
"I didn't know they would substitute results."
"But you knew something was being manipulated."
He breathed out.
"Yes."
Maya wrote on a pad:
KEEP HIM TALKING.
I asked:
"Why?"
"Because I was afraid."
"Of me?"
"Of losing everything."
There it was.
Not love.
Not grief.
Ownership.
He believed a child with Vanessa would secure his personal narrative and family control while I became easier to discard.
"Did you plan the violence?" I asked.
"No."
"Did Vanessa?"
"No. She wanted you humiliated. I lost control."
The words made me colder than denial would have.
He had lost control twenty separate times.
Then stood over me and demanded a signature.
"Why should I help you?"
"Because Marcus and Vanessa were going to take the company from both of us."
"Both of us?"
"It was our life."
"No, Adrian. It was your company and my invisible safety net."
He said nothing.
I ended the call.
The recording went to prosecutors.
Two days later Adrian was indicted on fraud-related charges separate from the domestic violence case.
Vanessa was charged with evidence tampering, fraud, unlawful administration of a substance, and conspiracy counts.
Marcus faced fraud and forgery charges.
The paternity question remained private.
Maya and I kept it that way.
A child should not become a headline because adults behaved badly.
Then the board of Vale Meridian called.
They wanted me to take control of the company temporarily.
I laughed.
"Absolutely not."
Maya smiled.
"Good answer."
But the board chairman continued.
"There is something you should know. You already own part of it."
I stopped laughing.
"How?"
"Through a trust established before your wedding."
May you like
I knew immediately whose trust.
Dad.
