Chapter 4 - Eleven Million Dollars

Vanessa recovered first.
"Those payments were legitimate."
Adrian looked at her.
"For what?"
"Brand strategy. Investor relations. Political outreach."
"You told me your mother was retired."
"She consults privately."
Claire tapped the document.
"Her company was incorporated three weeks before the first payment."
Adrian's lawyer stood.
"Everyone should stop speaking."
For once, Adrian listened.
Police separated us.
I spent the rest of the night at a private medical suite Dad's company kept for executives and family.
He arrived at 1:12 a.m.
Victor Hartwell did not look like a man coming to destroy an empire.
He looked like a father who had been trying not to run for three hours.
When he saw me, he stopped at the doorway.
"May I hug you?"
That question broke me.
I nodded.
He held me carefully.
"I'm sorry," I whispered.
"For what?"
"You warned me."
"I warned you because I was afraid. That doesn't make this your fault."
I cried into his jacket anyway.
When I could breathe again, I asked:
"What did you do to Adrian?"
Dad sat beside the bed.
"Nothing illegal."
"Dad."
"I withdrew guarantees I never should have provided without his knowledge."
"What guarantees?"
He looked guilty.
More guilty than Adrian had looked all night.
"Nearly four hundred million dollars in indirect credit support."
I stared at him.
"You said you were staying out of my marriage."
"I stayed out of the marriage. I did not stay out of the financial consequences of your husband failing while you were tied to him."
"That is not the same thing."
"No."
He sighed.
"I made a mistake too."
That surprised me.
Victor Hartwell did not often admit mistakes before sunrise.
He explained that he had hidden support behind funds, banks, and insurers Adrian would never connect to us.
He never handed Adrian money.
He simply made sure doors opened.
I thought of all the times Adrian praised his instincts.
All the times I said nothing.
"Why did everything freeze so fast?"
"Because several facilities required Hartwell guarantees. I revoked them."
"So he could still survive."
"If his business is sound."
"And if it isn't?"
Dad's expression hardened.
"Then he was already failing."
Claire entered with a tablet.
"We have a problem."
My stomach tightened.
"Adrian filed for a temporary restraining order."
"Against me?"
"Yes."
"For what?"
"He claims you threatened to use your father's power to ruin him unless he gave you full ownership of Vale Meridian."
I almost laughed.
Claire did not.
"He also claims tonight's injuries were self-inflicted after a marital argument."
Dad stood very slowly.
I touched his arm.
"No."
He looked at me.
"You promised this was my decision."
His jaw tightened.
Then he sat again.
"You're right."
Claire handed me the tablet.
May you like
At the bottom of Adrian's filing was a sworn witness statement.
Signed by Vanessa Cole.
