Chapter 2 - My Real Name

Adrian laughed once.

It came out wrong.

"What does that even mean?"

I bent down, picked up the divorce papers, and tore the signature page in half.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"You can't just--"

The doorbell rang.

Adrian frowned.

Nobody used the front bell at Vale House. Staff received everyone through the side entrance.

It rang again.

Then the house manager hurried in.

"Mr. Vale, there are attorneys outside."

"How many?"

"Four. And a doctor."

Adrian looked at me.

I said nothing.

The first person through the door was Claire Donovan, my father's general counsel.

She had known me since I was thirteen.

Her face changed when she saw me.

"Amelia."

Vanessa blinked.

Adrian turned slowly.

"Amelia?"

He knew me as Mia Hart.

Mia was real.

But incomplete.

My full name was Amelia Hartwell.

Daughter of Victor Hartwell, founder of Hartwell Dominion, a private investment group that owned pieces of banks, logistics networks, medical suppliers, real estate funds, and three companies Adrian had spent years begging to partner with.

Claire crossed the room and stopped three feet from me.

"Do you consent to medical examination and documentation?"

"Yes."

"Do you want law enforcement called?"

I looked at Adrian.

He finally looked frightened.

"Yes."

His face hardened.

"Mia, don't be ridiculous."

Claire turned toward him.

"Her name is Amelia Hartwell."

The color left his face.

Vanessa whispered, "Hartwell?"

Adrian knew the name.

Everyone in finance did.

Victor Hartwell was not a celebrity billionaire. He disliked interviews, avoided magazine covers, and bought influence through ownership rather than attention.

Adrian had once spent an entire dinner explaining to me how badly he wanted Hartwell Dominion to invest in Vale Meridian.

I had listened quietly.

He never noticed my hands were shaking under the table.

The doctor took me into the library.

Claire stayed.

Police arrived twelve minutes later.

Adrian's attorney arrived seven minutes after that.

By then, Claire had photographed the torn divorce documents and the riding crop.

Vanessa kept insisting she had only witnessed an argument.

Then Officer Reyes asked a simple question.

"Did you see Mr. Vale strike his wife?"

Vanessa's eyes moved to Adrian.

That was answer enough.

But the real panic began when Adrian's chief financial officer called.

The Hartwell-backed revolving credit facility had been suspended.

Two lenders demanded immediate collateral review.

A private equity partner postponed closing.

Three board members requested an emergency meeting.

Adrian stared at me.

"You did this."

"No."

I held his gaze.

"I stopped preventing it."

Then Claire handed me another document.

It was not from my father.

It came from Adrian's company.

A transfer authorization.

My forged signature sat at the bottom.
