Chapter 1 - The FallMy sister shoved my eight-year-old daughter off a wedding deck, and my father slapped the little girl's face while she lay helpless below it.

That's how my sister's two-million-dollar wedding ended.

But it wasn't how the nightmare began.

"Mia!" I screamed.

A minute earlier, the ocean had glittered beyond the reception tables. A hundred guests had watched Sarah parade across the teak deck in a dress with a train longer than a limousine. My daughter had been hurrying toward me, holding a shell she'd found for my birthday. Her sandal caught the lace. Wine splashed. Sarah spun around.

"You ruined it!" she shrieked.

Then both her hands struck Mia's chest.

My little girl went over the low railing. Six feet down. Rock, coral-colored sand, silence.

I grabbed the railing so hard a splinter drove into my palm. Mia's eyes were closed. One arm lay at an unnatural angle.

"Call the medical team!" I shouted. "Now!"

My mother stepped between me and the stairs. "Stop making a scene. Sarah has worked her whole life for this day."

"Move."

She hit me across the mouth. "Control that brat of yours."

I pushed past her, taking the side staircase two steps at a time. At the bottom, my father had reached Mia first. He was crouched over her, patting then striking her cheek.

"Get up," he snapped. "Nobody believes this act."

"Don't touch her!" I shoved his hand away. Mia didn't stir. I knelt beside her, terrified of moving her neck or back. "Baby, it's Mommy. I'm here."

A faint breath brushed my wrist. Relief lasted half a heartbeat before panic returned.

Above us, Sarah was crying about her dress. Greg, her new husband, stood frozen beside the railing. And my mother was already telling guests Mia had thrown herself over for attention.

I took out the phone I never used around my family.

"Marcus," I said when my head of security answered. "Medical emergency at the east deck. Bring the trauma team and the air ambulance. Preserve every camera feed. Then activate Code Red."

His voice sharpened. "Understood, Madam Chairwoman."

"And Marcus? The wedding is over. Nobody leaves until security identifies every witness."

Greg went pale at the title. My parents stared as if they'd misheard.

Mia's fingers twitched against mine.

Then her eyes opened just enough for a whisper.

"Mommy," she breathed, "Aunt Sarah said she would make me disappear."
