Chapter 18 - The Truth About GregGreg agreed to meet with his attorney and Naomi. I joined by video, convinced he'd traded his conscience for a chance to repair his marriage.

"I didn't agree with Sarah's complaint," he said. "My name is on it because she attached our prenuptial disclosure and called it supporting evidence. My lawyer is challenging the use of it."

Naomi examined the filing. "The complaint references you as a witness to Elena's funding arrangement. Have you given a statement?"

"Yes. A sworn statement saying Sarah told me her father's family paid. I didn't know Elena was the owner."

He pushed a folder toward the camera. "I also found this in our wedding planner's files."

It contained a seating chart with handwritten instructions from Sarah: KEEP MIA AWAY FROM THE NORTH CORRIDOR. IF ELENA ASKS, SAY IT'S UNDER REPAIR.

There was also a pre-wedding email in which Sarah asked the operations manager to disable two cameras for "privacy." The manager had refused in writing, then apparently later accepted my father's money.

"Why bring this to me?" I asked.

Greg looked miserable. "Because I stood still while your daughter needed help. I can't undo that. But I can stop pretending I saw nothing."

I didn't forgive him. I thanked him for the documents.

The civil claim collapsed quickly once records established who had voluntarily paid the wedding expenses and what the agreement permitted if serious safety incidents occurred. The case against Sarah would take longer.

After the meeting, Greg sent a letter addressed to Mia. I didn't give it to her. I put it away for a time when she could choose whether to read it.

That evening, Lily arrived at our house for dinner. Mia was shy until Lily produced a battered detective novel with a sea turtle bookmark tucked inside.

"You like turtles?" Mia asked.

"My favorite animal," Lily said.

They were still talking when Naomi's phone buzzed. She checked the screen, her expression changing.

"Elena," she said, "the forensic audit is finished. There's something in the trust that no one found before."

"More missing money?"

"No. A specific instruction from your grandfather about what you were meant to do with the land."
