Chapter 15 - The Voice From Seventeen Years AgoWe listened to the recording the next morning with Naomi and an investigator present.

Grandfather's voice came first. Rougher than I remembered, but unmistakable.
"Robert, I need you to say what happened to the Shoreline money."
My father's younger voice answered, irritated. "I transferred it. I can put it back."
"You took money intended for Elena and for the staff retirement fund."
"Don't lecture me about family."
"I'm asking you to tell the truth before the auditors find it."
A chair scraped. Then my father said, "If you make this public, I'll tell everyone Elena did it. She worked in your office. They'd believe me."
I covered my mouth. At sixteen, I'd spent weekends alphabetizing files for Grandfather because he paid me ten dollars an hour and treated me like I mattered.
The recording continued.
"She's a child," Grandfather said. "You would ruin your own daughter?"
"Then don't force my hand."
It ended with a click.
The room felt airless. Naomi paused before speaking. "This is significant evidence, but the authorities will still verify provenance and establish what happened afterward."
"He was willing to frame me," I whispered. "Even then."
Ruth supplied missing context. Grandfather had forced Robert to resign from management and had amended his estate plan. But he fell ill before the changes were fully communicated. Robert then assumed control of the paperwork, shut Ruth out, and told me Grandfather had lost everything.
"He didn't lose it," Ruth said. "Robert hid it."
Mia came downstairs with a box of colored pencils. I switched off the recording before she entered. She drew a crooked orange sun and asked whether a scar could hurt forever.
"Sometimes it gets tender," I said, touching my palm where the splinter had been. "But it can heal."
Later that afternoon, Inspector Rasheed called with an update on Sarah's case. Investigators had reviewed synchronized video and witness statements.
"We are referring the assault findings to prosecutors," she said. "There is one more witness who has asked to speak."
May you like
"Who?"
"Your mother. She says Sarah's push wasn't an accident. And she claims your father told her to keep Mia away from the northern service road."
