Chapter 11 - The Letter They StoleRuth had been discharged from the island and was staying at a safe hotel under her own name. When I showed her the envelope, she went still.

"Daniel wrote that before his last surgery," she said. "I watched him seal it."
"What was inside?"
"He wouldn't tell me. He said only you had the right to read it."
Security reviewed footage and traced Sarah's movements after leaving the office. She passed the envelope to my mother, who slipped it into a cream handbag. Police took the video as evidence and sought the document.
My mother answered my attorney's request with a message: STOP TORTURING YOUR OWN FAMILY.
I let Naomi handle it.
That afternoon, Mia's doctors cleared her to travel with follow-up care, concussion precautions, and instructions about rest. She was tired, sore, and unusually quiet. When we boarded Meridian's small medical transport aircraft, she stared at the empty seat beside me.
"Can I sit there?"
"For the whole flight."
She nestled against my arm. "Will they be mad when they find out you own the island?"
"Probably."
"Are you mad?"
"Yes. But I'm more worried about you."
Mia thought about that. "I liked the turtles. Can we see them somewhere else?"
"Of course."
Back in Seattle, our housekeeper, Carmen, met us at the door. She cried when she saw Mia's splint, then made her grilled cheese cut into tiny triangles. I had never been so grateful for an ordinary kitchen.
After Mia slept, Naomi came over carrying a sealed courier packet. Inside were financial records showing payments from Grandfather's trust to accounts controlled by my father. The money had been moved in small pieces for years.
"He treated her inheritance like a private line of credit," Naomi said.
"And my mother?"
"A number of transfers went to an account held jointly with her."
Before I could reply, Carmen called from the front hall. A courier stood outside with no sender listed.

The package contained a ripped yellow envelope and one page of Grandfather's letter.
Across the top, in his familiar careful handwriting, were the words: ELENA, YOUR FATHER IS NOT THE PERSON HE CLAIMS TO BE.
