Chapter 14 - The Night at the GateI didn't open the gate.

I called our local security team and the police non-emergency line, explained that an estranged family member was outside after threats involving my child, and asked for assistance. Then I took Mia upstairs.

"Is Grandpa here?" she asked.

"He is outside. He won't come in."

"I don't want him to see me."

"He won't."

Carmen sat with Mia while I watched the camera feed from my study. My father stood beside the car in an expensive linen suit, his shoulders rigid with anger. My mother emerged from the passenger seat carrying the same cream handbag I'd seen on the wedding video.

They pressed the intercom.

"Elena!" my mother shouted. "Open this gate. The neighbors can hear us."

I answered through the speaker. "Leave. Any communication can go through Naomi."

"You turned our family into a police matter," my father said.

"Your actions did that."

"You think you've won because you've got money?"

"This isn't a contest. Mia needs safety and time to heal."

My mother stepped close to the camera. "You were a difficult child. Ungrateful, always making up problems. Sarah was the one who loved us."

For once, her words landed and stopped. They didn't go any deeper.

"Good night, Mom."

A patrol car arrived. An officer spoke with my parents, then watched them return to their vehicle. My father drove away without another word.

When the street was empty, I went to Mia. She was sitting under a blanket fort Carmen had made from two chairs.

"Did they go?" she asked.

"Yes."

She held out her hand. "You can come in my fort if you want."

I crawled beneath the blanket, gray business suit and all.

At midnight, Marcus sent an update from the island. Police had secured the bunker entrance, and an independent locksmith had opened Grandfather's cabinet with Ruth's key present. Inside were bound ledgers, signed property deeds, and a recording device.
