Chapter 17 - The Line He CrossedI passed Lily's account to our attorneys and to the police immediately. Then I reviewed every safety arrangement around Mia: school pickups, household access, travel permissions, emergency contacts. I didn't tell Mia frightening details she couldn't control. I told her which adults were safe and reminded her she never had to keep an adult's threatening secret.

The next morning a local officer came to document the messages and discuss protective options. Authorities in both countries coordinated through the appropriate channels.

My father sent a final email to me directly.

You have forty-eight hours to unfreeze the sale, it read. After that, don't blame me for what happens to Meridian.

Naomi checked with the board. Meridian's core businesses were sound; the sale was not necessary for our financing. The threat was meant to frighten me into signing away a claim, not protect a company.

We replied once through counsel. Any further threats would be preserved and reported.

A week later, a court granted interim relief preventing disputed property transfers while ownership was examined. Investigators continued their work on the alleged fraud and assault. The process wasn't glamorous. It was paperwork, witness calls, and slow, careful verification.

Then Inspector Rasheed phoned.

"We've arrested Robert Mercer in connection with the attempted destruction of evidence and related offenses under investigation," she said. "He has legal counsel. Nothing is decided yet."

I set the phone down after the call. There was no rush of victory. Only a deep, exhausted sadness.

Mia wandered into the kitchen in pajamas printed with turtles. "Can we make pancakes?"

"Absolutely."

She climbed onto her stool, one wrist still braced, and supervised while I stirred the batter. Carmen laughed when our first pancake turned into a lopsided island.

"It looks like our old resort," Mia said.

"The one with the turtles?"

She nodded. "Maybe one day I won't be scared of it."

"Maybe," I said. "And if you are, we never have to go back."

That afternoon Naomi called with a different problem. Sarah had filed a civil claim alleging that I promised to finance her wedding and then destroyed it out of spite.

At the bottom of the complaint, under supporting evidence, she listed a witness I'd never expected.

Greg Wells.
