Chapter 13 - The Road to Portsmouth

Voss stopped asking to leave after Dominic showed him the traffic-camera still.
"I want my lawyer."
"You are a lawyer," Emma muttered.
Dominic's attorney took over from there. Police were contacted. No one touched Voss. No one threatened him. Dominic wanted every step clean.
Natalie wanted something else.
"I want him to tell me why he was following Evan."
Voss sat across from her in the library, his expensive confidence finally gone.
"I wasn't following him."
"Your car was."
"An employee may have used it."
Dominic placed a second image on the table. Grainy, but clear enough: Voss at a gas station forty minutes before the crash, standing beside the same sedan.
"Try again," Dominic said.
Voss looked toward the windows.
Rain streaked the glass.
"Evan took documents from my office."
Natalie's hands curled.
"What documents?"
"Foundation transfers. Draft sale agreements. He thought Brooke was moving money."
"Was she?"
Voss did not answer.
Dominic did. "Yes."
Voss swallowed. "I followed him because I needed the papers back."
"Did you hit his car?" Natalie asked.
"No."
"Did you run him off the road?"
"No."
"Then what happened?"
Voss's mouth trembled.
"He saw me behind him. He sped up. The road was wet. He lost control."
Natalie stared at him.
"And you left him there."
"I stopped."
"You called 911?"
Silence.
"You called 911?"
"No."
Natalie made a sound Dominic would remember for the rest of his life.
Not a scream.
Something quieter and worse.
Voss rushed on. "He was already gone. I panicked. Brooke told me if I stayed, the investigation would destroy everything."
Dominic's head turned slowly toward Brooke, who stood in the doorway under security watch.
"I told you to wait in the sitting room."
Brooke ignored him. She looked at Voss.
"You idiot."
Voss stared back. "You told me to leave him there."
Natalie closed her eyes.
Brooke whispered, "I told you to protect the family."
Dominic's voice became deadly calm.
May you like
"No. You told him to protect you."
Sirens sounded beyond the gates.
