Chapter 3 - Dominic's Signature

Natalie picked up the letter with trembling fingers.

It appeared official. Mercer letterhead. Dominic's private office address. A signature in black ink at the bottom.

"I hereby authorize my wife, Brooke Mercer, to consolidate all Mercer residential assets, including the Catherine Mercer residence, into Mercer Holdings."

Natalie read it twice.

"He wouldn't do this."

Brooke folded her arms. "You think you know him better than his wife?"

"I think I know my uncle."

"Your uncle is tired of carrying people."

Natalie flinched.

Emma saw Dominic move behind the door, but he stayed silent.

That frightened her more than if he had exploded.

Brooke tapped the signature. "You have ten minutes. Sign voluntarily, and Mercer Holdings will pay for a rental for six months. Refuse, and my attorneys begin eviction today."

"With Noah in the house?"

"Children move every day."

Natalie's voice cracked. "He just lost his father."

"And the world did not stop."

A floorboard creaked behind the service door.

Brooke turned.

Emma dropped a spoon on purpose.

The clang snapped Brooke's attention back.

"Clumsy," Brooke said.

Emma smiled thinly. "Happens when people show up before sunrise with fake letters."

Brooke's eyes sharpened. "Be very careful."

Natalie looked again at the signature. "I want to call Dominic."

"He's in meetings."

"At ten in the morning in London?"

"He won't answer."

"Then I'll leave a message."

Brooke reached across the table and took Natalie's phone.

The room went dead silent.

"Give that back," Natalie said.

"When you sign."

That was when Emma understood.

This was not paperwork.

It was an ambush.

Natalie stepped forward. Brooke lifted the phone out of reach and said, very quietly, "Don't make this ugly. Noah has already had enough instability."

Natalie's face changed.

"What did you just say?"

Brooke's tone stayed sweet. "I'm saying a court notices unstable homes. Financial stress. Emotional breakdowns. Mothers who can't cope."

Behind the door, Dominic's eyes became ice.

Then a small voice came from the hallway.

"Mom?"

Noah stood there in dinosaur pajamas.

May you like

Brooke turned toward him and smiled.

"Good. Maybe now you'll understand why your mother needs to sign."
