Chapter 6 - The Dead Notary

Emma leaned over Dominic's shoulder.
"Helen Ward?"
Dominic nodded.
Emma's face hardened. "She handled your mother's estate. She died in 2023."
Brooke's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Dominic placed the paper flat on the table. "You brought me a forged authorization, a fraudulent transfer, and a notarization from a dead woman. Before breakfast. That's ambitious."
Brooke's composure cracked. "I didn't prepare these documents."
"Who did?"
"Sterling Voss."
Noah whispered, "Mr. Voss."
Natalie looked down at him. "The man you heard her talking to?"
Noah nodded.
Dominic pulled out his phone. "Emma, take Natalie and Noah upstairs."
Brooke laughed nervously. "Why? Are you calling the police?"
"Not yet."
That answer frightened her more.
"Dominic, listen to me. Sterling said the trust had defects. He said the property could expose us to litigation. I was trying to clean it up."
"At five in the morning?"
"You weren't here."
"That part keeps coming up."
He dialed one number.
A man's voice answered on the second ring. "Sir?"
"Lock the gates. No one leaves the estate without my approval."
Brooke stepped back. "You can't hold me here."
"I can secure my property while my attorney verifies whether someone inside it is carrying forged documents."
"You're being dramatic."
"You threatened an eight-year-old's mother with custody proceedings to force a signature."
Brooke looked at Natalie. "I never said I'd take Noah."
"You wanted her to think you could."
Dominic's phone buzzed.
A text from security.
VEHICLE AT SOUTH GATE. DRIVER CLAIMS APPOINTMENT WITH MRS. MERCER. NAME: STERLING VOSS.
Dominic showed Brooke the screen.
Her face collapsed.
"You invited him here."
"No."
"Then he came at five-thirty in the morning for the view?"
Brooke backed toward the counter.
Dominic sent one reply.
LET HIM IN.
Natalie stared at him. "Why?"
Dominic's voice was calm.
May you like
"Because I want to hear what a man says when he thinks the person he's robbing is four thousand miles away."
A minute later, headlights swept across the rain-dark courtyard.
