Chapter 8 - Eight Point Six Million

Brooke read the message and went white.
"That isn't what it looks like."
Emma actually laughed.
"You people always say that right before it turns out to be exactly what it looks like."
Brooke shot her a murderous glance.
Dominic did not look away from his wife. "The Catherine Mercer Foundation funds pediatric hospice care, scholarships, and emergency housing. Eight point six million dollars moved through shell entities tied to Voss. Explain."
Voss stood again. "I am invoking privilege."
"You are not my attorney."
"I represent Mrs. Mercer."
Dominic's eyes shifted to Brooke. "Good. She'll need one."
Brooke slammed her palm on the table. "Enough! You built an empire by doing things no polite boardroom would approve of, and now you're pretending to be shocked by aggressive asset management?"
Natalie flinched at the venom.
Dominic remained still.
"I have made ruthless business decisions," he said. "I have never stolen from dying children."
Brooke looked toward Voss.
It was instinctive.
But Dominic caught it.
"How much?" he asked.
No answer.
"How much did you take?"
Voss said, "Do not answer that."
Brooke exploded. "You said the foundation accounts were dormant!"
Silence.
Voss closed his eyes.
Brooke realized what she had done.
Dominic's voice became almost gentle. "Thank you."
She stared at him.
"That was useful."
"You trapped me."
"I asked a question."
Natalie stood. "You stole money from Grandma's foundation?"
Brooke's face twisted. "Your grandmother hated me. She left half the family structure designed to keep me outside."
"Because she saw you," Natalie said.
Brooke moved toward her.
Dominic rose at once.
"Sit down."
Brooke stopped.
For a moment, the only sound was rain.
Then Dominic's security chief entered.
"Sir, we searched Mr. Voss's vehicle with his consent after he claimed he had nothing relevant in it. We found this under the passenger seat."
He placed a red leather ledger on the table.
Voss's face changed.
Dominic opened it.
Names. Dates. Account numbers. Initials.
And one line written beside the old Mercer house:
N.M. SIGNATURE BY 6 A.M. - B.M. TO RECEIVE 12M ON CLOSING.
Natalie whispered, "Twelve million dollars."
May you like
Dominic looked at Brooke.
"You were going to sell my mother's promise for a commission."
