Chapter 1 - The Ring in Her Hand

The ring hit Eleanor Whitmore's palm before Nathan even realized his wife had seen him.
Across the ballroom, Nathan was still smiling at Olivia Grant.
Emma stood beneath a ceiling of crystal chandeliers with one hand over her eighteen-week belly and an ultrasound picture hidden inside her clutch.
She had spent all afternoon imagining how she would tell him.
Now she was taking off her wedding ring.
"Emma," Eleanor whispered. "Don't do this in the middle of the gala."
"I'm not doing anything in the middle of the gala." Emma's voice was almost calm. "I'm leaving it."
Eleanor looked toward her son. Olivia's hand rested on Nathan's shoulder. His palm sat against the bare skin at her waist.
"Talk to him first."
"I've been talking to him for three years."
"He loves you."
Emma gave a tired laugh. "Maybe. But he loves knowing I'll always be there more."
On the dance floor, Olivia leaned close and said something into Nathan's ear. He laughed again.
Emma's throat closed.
That morning, she had heard their baby's heartbeat. Alone.
Last month, she had watched the tiny shape turn on a monitor. Alone.
Eleanor closed her fingers around the ring.
"What do you want me to tell him?"
Emma looked at Nathan one last time.
"Tell him I finally got tired of waiting to matter."
She walked out before her courage could change its mind.
Nathan did not notice.
Not until twelve minutes later, when Eleanor stepped between him and Olivia and held out her hand.
His wedding ring was still on his finger.
Emma's was in his mother's palm.
Nathan went white.
"Where is she?"
"Gone."
"What happened?"
Eleanor stared at him with open disgust. "You really have to ask?"
Nathan turned toward the hotel doors.
Olivia caught his arm. "Nathan, the press line starts in five minutes."
He looked down at her hand as if seeing it for the first time.
Then Eleanor said quietly, "Your wife had something in her purse she came here to show you."
Nathan froze.
"What?"
Eleanor's expression changed.
May you like
Because she knew exactly what Emma had been carrying.
And Nathan did not.
