Chapter 8 - The Filing

Nathan had never seen the filing.

"Cancel it," he told his attorney.

"It was submitted automatically after Mrs. Whitmore left the residence. Standard asset preservation."

"Standard for who?"

"For clients with your exposure."

"I didn't authorize it."

The attorney hesitated. "Your standing family-office instructions did."

Nathan swore.

Now one of them had reached across the country and threatened Emma before he could stop it.

"Withdraw everything. Today."

"That may create risk."

"My wife is not a risk."

He called Emma.

She did not answer.

He sent one message.

I did not authorize the filing. Old family-office instructions triggered it. I'm withdrawing it now. You do not need to believe me. Your lawyer can verify.

Then he did something that made his attorney stare.

"Revise the marital asset protocol. Emma gets independent access to every account legally hers. No freezes without her signature or a court order."

"Nathan, in the event of divorce—"

"Especially in the event of divorce."

Across the country, Emma sat in Mara's bookstore with a local attorney named Grace Kim.

Grace read Nathan's withdrawal notice.

"This is unusually fast."

"Do you believe him?"

"I believe the document. I don't practice marriage."

Emma almost smiled.

"It's also not trust."

"Correct."

For the first time, Emma felt someone was speaking her language.

That evening, Eleanor called again.

"I need to tell you something about Olivia."

Emma closed the bookstore office door.

"What?"

"She wasn't just close to Nathan. She was close to the board. Nathan's father hired her years ago."

"Why does that matter?"

"Because she has been pushing Nathan to separate his personal assets from the family foundation. If your marriage ended badly, she stood to gain influence over both."

Emma frowned. "You think this was about money?"

"I think Olivia likes Nathan. I also think she likes access. Those are not mutually exclusive."

Then Eleanor lowered her voice.

"And I found something else."

"What?"

"Three months ago, Olivia asked the family office to update Nathan's emergency successor designation."

Emma's pulse quickened.

"To who?"

"To herself."

Emma sat very still.

"Did Nathan approve it?"

"No."

"Then how did she think she could?"

May you like

Eleanor paused.

"Because somebody in that office was helping her."
