Chapter 15 - The Lie With Her Name On It

Emma felt the baby move under Nathan's hand as Grace explained the accusation.

Olivia claimed Emma had secretly worked with Martin Voss to trigger a marital scandal, force a separation, and increase her divorce settlement.

It was absurd.

It was also documented.

"There are emails," Grace said. "Messages from an address using your name."

Emma stared at Nathan. "Do you believe her?"

He answered immediately. "No."

"You haven't seen the evidence."

"I don't need to."

Emma's jaw tightened. "That's not enough."

Nathan understood.

Blind faith was not trust either.

"Then we prove it."

The fake emails had been sent from an account created with Emma's old college address as recovery verification.

Mara found the clue.

"You still use that address anywhere?"

"No. I haven't logged in for years."

"Who knew it?"

Emma thought.

Nathan.

Eleanor.

Old friends.

And Olivia, who had once prepared a profile on Emma for the foundation's anniversary book.

Grace subpoenaed the account records.

The recovery request traced back to a device registered to Whitmore Family Foundation communications.

Olivia's department.

Nathan gave investigators full access.

The board threatened to remove him.

"You're handing prosecutors internal systems," one director snapped. "Do you understand what this could cost?"

Nathan looked around the room.

"Yes."

"Then why are you doing it?"

"Because my wife is being framed with tools my organization gave the person framing her."

"Your duty is to shareholders."

"My duty does not include obstructing a criminal investigation."

The vote to suspend him failed by one.

That evening, Nathan returned to his hotel near the bookstore.

At 11:40 p.m., someone knocked.

He opened the door to find Olivia.

Her mascara was smudged. Her coat was wet.

"You need to stop helping them."

Nathan stared at her. "How did you find me?"

"Same way I found Emma."

"You need to leave."

"Martin is going to destroy all of us."

Nathan's voice hardened. "There is no us."

Olivia's face twisted.

"I did everything because you were supposed to choose me."

"I never promised you that."

"You didn't have to."

Nathan reached for his phone.

Olivia stepped back.

"Before you call the police, ask yourself one thing."

She smiled through tears.

"Who do you think gave Martin access to Emma's old account?"

May you like

Nathan froze.

Olivia whispered, "It wasn't me."
