Chapter 12 - The Page That Changed

Emma remembered signing the prenup eight years earlier in a conference room with Nathan beside her.

He had hated the whole thing.

"My father is making this uglier than it needs to be," he had whispered.

Emma had signed anyway because she wanted Nathan, not his money.

Now Grace placed two versions on the hospital table.

"This is your original scanned copy," the attorney said. "This is the family office version."

Emma compared them.

The original guaranteed independent counsel, housing, medical expenses, and shared parental decision-making during any separation.

The altered version gave Nathan's family office broad authority to preserve assets and seek emergency jurisdiction over an unborn child's residence.

Emma went cold.

"They changed it after I signed."

"Looks that way."

"Did Nathan know?"

"I don't know."

Emma called him.

"Did you alter our prenup?"

Nathan went silent.

"What?"

She explained.

He sounded physically sick.

"Emma, I swear to you, I didn't know."

"Your signature is on the filing."

"Then they used it."

"That's what everyone keeps saying. They used your signature. Your policies. Your office. Your name. At what point does that stop being an excuse?"

Nathan took the hit without defending himself.

"It doesn't."

Emma stopped.

"What?"

"It doesn't stop being my responsibility just because I didn't personally replace the page. I built my life around people handling things so I wouldn't have to look. That made this possible."

"What are you going to do?"

"Even if it destroys your family?"

"Emma, they already tried to use our child against you."

She closed her eyes.

For the first time, she heard not a CEO managing damage but a father understanding the danger.

Two days later, Nathan's lawyers turned over the files voluntarily.

Martin Voss hired criminal counsel.

Olivia disappeared from New York.

Then Emma's blood pressure spiked again.

Priya ordered strict bed rest.

"No travel. No drama. No surprise billionaires."

Emma managed a weak smile.

That night, she stood at the hospital window looking at rain on the glass.

Her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A voice message.

She pressed play.

Olivia's voice filled the room.

"You think Nathan is changing for you? Ask him what happened in Chicago. Ask him why he never told you about the hotel room."

Emma's hand went numb.

May you like

Chicago.

The trip Nathan had always insisted was only business.
