Chapter 11 - The Ghost Account

The ghost account belonged to no ghost.

It belonged to Martin Voss, the family office's chief administrator.

Nathan had known Martin since he was sixteen.

He denied everything.

"Those credentials were archived."

Nathan slid the access log across the table.

"They were used six times this year."

"Then IT has a problem."

"Security traced the logins to your office."

Martin's face did not move.

That scared Nathan more than panic would have.

"Why were you helping Olivia?"

"I wasn't."

"She tried to change my emergency successor designation."

"Routine contingency planning."

"To herself?"

Martin leaned back. "Your father trusted Olivia."

"My father is dead."

"And the company is drifting."

There it was.

Nathan stared at him.

"You think my marriage made me weak."

"I think Emma has never understood what Whitmore requires."

Nathan stood.

"You're fired."

Martin smiled faintly. "You can't fire the man who knows where every body is buried."

"Watch me."

Security escorted him out.

Within an hour, auditors began combing through years of records.

They found payments routed through consulting firms connected to Olivia.

They found unauthorized searches for Emma's medical providers.

And then they found something worse.

A memo from two years earlier discussing Emma's first miscarriage.

Reputational impact minimal. Consider whether ongoing fertility complications create succession uncertainty.

Nathan read the sentence until the words blurred.

His wife's grief had been reduced to a risk category.

He called Eleanor.

She went quiet when he read it aloud.

"Your father used to talk like that," she said.

"Did he know?"

"He knew everything that happened in that office."

Nathan's voice broke. "And I became him."

"No."

"I ignored Emma while people around me treated her like an obstacle."

"Then don't waste time hating yourself. Fix the system you benefited from."

Nathan ordered an outside forensic audit and stepped away from the family office entirely.

That evening, Emma received a call from Grace.

"We need to talk about your prenup."

Emma frowned. "What about it?"

"The copy your husband's family office filed isn't the copy you signed."

Emma sat up in bed.

"What?"

"A page was replaced."

"Which page?"

May you like

Grace hesitated.

"The one covering custody and financial support during pregnancy."
